Speech delivered at the School of Earths and Environmental Science 2014 Orientation

School of Earths and Environmental Science 2014 Orientation Speech

Firstly, I would like to welcome all you freshman, and as some of my feminist colleagues would say ‘freshwomen’ to the University of Guyana. Most importantly however, I want to congratulate you on your achievements that facilitated your acceptance into the School of Earth and Environmental Science.

The School has a tradition of excellence especially the Geography and Geography/ Economics majors.
Geography is an attractive major for students. Its theories and methods provide analytical techniques applicable over a broad spectrum of occupations. And ‘plenty plenty’ traveling.
For the students who are planning on ending their formal education with a bachelor’s degree,  a geography major provides marketable skills and a broad perspective especially on environment, society and planning that enable graduates to move beyond entry level positions.

For similar reasons geography provide a sound foundation for students who plan to enter graduate work in a variety of fields from geography to business, land use planning, forestry, petroleum, law and medicine.
The potential for practicing geography in private enterprise and government has grown in recent years  in areas such as;

School of Earth and Environmental Science
GIS Analyst
Geology
Forestry
Geomorphologist
Petroleum engineering
Meteorologists
Pollution control
Real estate
Economist
Business analysis
Marketing
Resource management and many others

Finally I want to personally invite all you seesers to join the Eco Trust Society which is our club, the only environmental group on campus, and it is the bond that holds us together as a family. And we are a family.

By the way, you should know that it was SEES EcoTrust society booths that won as the best booth at this year University of Guyana career day activities. And that deserves a round of applause!
Thank you!
